DAY 151

Have you ever been pecked on the head by a mommy bird protecting her babies?

Seeing this bird today hiss at the children reminded me of a bird that once pecked my head as a child. Unbeknownst to me there was a nest in the tree and I got a little too close.

I was surprised to find this nest in plain sight in the open, rocky landscape right beside where we parked at church. If anyone got close, she would hiss and flair up her wings, hence the orange feathers.

After a little research I learned that this bird is a killdeer, named for the peculiar sound it makes. Nesting in open areas (like lawns or parking lots) in rock or gravel is common amongst them. Who knew?

  1. I couldn't imagine being pecked on the head by a bird, that would traumatize me, in a serious way.

That's neat that she was out and in plain sight, I don't think it would be too good for the chance of survival for her egg lings but...

Just this morning Michael was telling me that there is a nest on the side of our house in the landscaping rock and I told him that, he was mistaken and birds don't nest on the ground. Looks like I owe him an apology.

  2. I'm glad you got such a great picture of that bird. It is a great memory!
