Help.

I'm not even sure what I used to do before bed pre-computer days. I was probably much more productive as a human being. My husband is on nights, kids are in bed, and the computer is my company. Unfortunately not the best company tonight, as it's made me rather infuriated and I'm about ready to throw it out the window.

After reading a discussion on dressing up your blog over at SITS and hearing some harsh critiques, I decided it was time to do some upgrades- such a lovely idea to have clickable tabs under my header, don't ya think? It would make for much easier navigation.

So, I've spent the last couple hours attempting to do just that.

Can I scream now?

I could have been watching some tv or lost in dream world by now, instead I am in front of this computer at this late hour trying to wrap my brain around this computer lingo. It sounded so easy in theory. I don't know where it went so wrong.

So, I'm giving up for now and throwing out this plea for help. If you know anything about blogging or web design or feel any degree of sympathy... please throw me a bone, would ya?

Just when I thought I was making headway my computer freaked out and started randomly opening like 50 pages and then shut down. AHHHH!

So, I'm doing what I should have done hours ago... I'm stopping this insanity and finding my way to the comfort of my bed, who has been calling my name for some time now.

  1. I have to check out that discussion. What did they say?

Of all the things they picked at on that thread, what they didn't mention until recently was content. Really, that's what makes or breaks a blog. You can have the best design, but if your content stinks, it wouldn't matter.

When I was doing this, I googled every single step. Search what you want to do and the platform you use, which I think is Blogger? I eventually found a template theme that I customized a bit for myself. It was much easier than starting from the ground up.

I hope you get some rest! Tomorrow is a new day! Good luck!

  2. I was doing the same thing last night! I want to put in clickable tabs as well (I think blogger calls them pages), but I decided to start with the header. I have no idea what I am doing and waste hours trying to figure it out. Once you get good info about the tabs, let me know. I am so tired today and wish I could devote a week of getting my blog up to par. That discussion was overwhelming! So, glad people got what they needed though. Now off to figure it out!

  3. I also didn't catch that you were from Cedar Rapids at first. Been there a few times to run and have some college friends from there! I'm excited to read more and get to know you!

  4. in blogger, you need to have the "pages" widget installed under your header to have the clickable tabs appear up there. so if you've already created the pages under the posting section of blogger, great. You need to go into the layout section and find the pages gadget and install it under your header. once you have the pages widget installed, you'll be able to choose how to order the pages and which ones you want to apear, etc. All this assumes your template allows for a pages header in that area :) does that make any sense? hope it helps. I am self taught (recently) and have spent hours myself :) good luck!

  8. Isn't it amazing what a time-suck blog design can be? I'm in no way an expert, but feel free to ask any questions and I can tell you what I know.

I raelly like the look of your blog! I'm not sure how someone could criticize it!

    I'm now following you back.
