Tech UNsavvy

When I think of someone who is technologically UNSAVVY… I picture MY face. It’s true.

At the risk of making myself sound old I need to mention that when I was in high school they didn’t have computers. In college I had a laptop that was more like a data processor (which sporadically ate term papers at will) and google wasn’t even invented yet. Do you remember those days? However did we survive?

The world seems to be advancing faster than I can even keep up. It took me like 7 years to learn Photoshop Elements 2. Now it’s too old for my new computer. And my new computer discriminates against almost everything I own, including 2 of my 3 printers. But, out with the old and in with the new.

So, two days ago I received an email from Kristi over at Live and Love out Loud. She asked me where my email feedburner was because she couldn’t find it. Um, yeah. That’s because I didn’t have one. And I had to google it to figure out what it even was.

I feel like a pioneer, only there are plenty that have paved the way for me… I just can’t keep up with their pace. So, I continue to plug away on this technological journey. It seems I catch my breath and then the latest and greatest is unveiled. I am perpetually 3 steps behind.

Tweets, Widgets, Linkies, Buttons (and no, not the sewing kind), Buzz, Digg… Ahhh! It is an entirely new language all its own.

Well, are you sitting down?

Brace yourselves… today I joined TWITTER.

Yes, girls. I’m a quick study and after a little encouragement and tons of google cliff notes… I’ve joined the tweeting twits in the twitter world. Better late than never, right?

My name is projectalicia.

You can even click on the twitter “follow me” icon on the right. Yes, it works. And yes, I did that all by myself.

Tonight I took the plunge and downloaded tweetie to my iphone, which by the way, is the best thing EVER invented in the history of time. I'm talking about my iphone, of course.

Willis Party of 6 wrote a funny blurb on her blog about just this. I had a good laugh.

Photobucket

Thinking, thinking…

Nope, can’t think of anything it can’t do. I have become an iphone addict. (See photo above.) There is an app for absolutely everything... the world at your fingertips. Literally.

Who would have ever thought just a few years ago that I could be riding down the road in a car tweeting, googling and texting AND all at the same time? Not while driving of course.

It’s a crazy time we live in and although I’m in a little over my head at times, I’d rather fail trying than never try at all.

Besides, I wouldn't want my kids to surpass me. How else am I going to protect them? So, think of that the next time you feel guilty about sitting at your computer to blog or chat on fb.

Oh, and look out world. Alicia is open for tweets.

  1. congrats on jumping into the world of twitter. I'm in your camp. I don't really get it all. What the heck is digg anyway? I'll head over and join your twitter group and then we can be tech savvy together. :) Have a great Thursday.

  2. don't worry - I grew up in this 'tech age' and I STILL don't understand what half of them do! I've heard of them, but really understanding.. nope! There's always something new.

  3. I do not love Technology like Kip Dynamite. I'm doing it, because I have to keep up, like you. And yes, I have a feedburner and I know way too much about feedburners because mine has been acting up and it has been ultra, ultra frustrating.

I don't Tweet because if I did, my family would never have a single bit of clean laundry. I don't need another thing sucking me in.

And as for a beautiful mess? You are absolutely beautiful and by the looks of that kitchen, there is no mess. I wish my kitchen looked that clean, but teenagers don't understand the concept of putting things away. So, the mess title belongs to me.

  4. Ha! I know exactly what you mean. I am starting to get a little more active on twitter. I have no idea what digg and that other thing you mentioned is though!

  5. I have no idea what DIGG is either. Just threw it out there as another crazy word in this tech explosion of sorts. Anyone out there wanna help us out here?

  7. I feel this way sometimes and often find myself Googling "Blogging 101 for Beginners"...no joke. It helps. ;)

Oh, how I wish for an iphone...just can't justify the fees right now. And I know I'd become a complete addict. It also keeps me from needing to join twitter...too hard to tweet from the desktop all day.

Love your blog and I'm your newest follower...you make me laugh!

  10. Welcome to Twitter. I am on there but half the time it won't load for me. I keep meaning to contact them about that. I too love my iPhone. What a great invention. Though thank you for reminding me that all this time on technology is to keep up on it so that I may keep ahead of my child and protect him ;)

  12. Digg is just a place for you to recommend sites you like to other people.

If you traded my LG storm with an iPhone, i would be helpless. iDon't get the iPhone.

Lish, I am THRILLED that you are on Twitter! I feel like I have a new almost-text messaging buddy. :)

  16. I'm following you on Twitter now! Don't feel bad...I have no idea what/how feedburner works, never even heard of DIGG, and still don't know what I'm doing on Twitter.
PS - when I was in HS, we didn't have computers, either. In fact, I remember taking learning to type...on a typewriter!

  17. Thanks for following me on Blogfrog! I love your blog. It is soooo well done. The music is fantastic. You definitely have me contemplating a wordless wednesday post. (I'm so bad about taking pics.) You're really quite an inspiration.

  22. I'm so happy you are on twitter! and can i say, you are SOOOO tiny!

  23. Oh my god I love you and we are technically retarded soul sisters. At least you were smart enough to google it. I'd probably just ignore it and hide for 2-3 days. I love your blog. I'm your latest follower....

  24. My daughter asked me just today if I texted when I was a teenager. Um. No. She almost died when I told her I just started texting last year. Now, off to follow your tweets!

  25. LOL! I can so empathize with you!

I'll add you on Twitter. I'm not very regular on it though. I try to get on at least 1-2 times a week. I just don't have time in my day to blog, Facebook and Tweet all day.

  27. You may be an iphone addict, and you may not be tech savvy, but girl - you have one CLEAN kitchen! {grin}

  28. I feel the same way about technology - I didn't have an email account until i was a senior in high school... and my friend had to show me how to "work" it ;)
I don't know if I will ever join twitter... so, you're one step ahead of me!!

  29. I take part in these things, but I have no idea what I'm doing. Yes, I'm a twitard. I take part in stumbling. I want to be buzzed. And I have a handful of other buttons I would like the world to push. Unfortunately, I have no idea what they are meant for.

Congrats on figuring things out. Can you solve my problems, too?

  30. I had to come back to ad (in a non creepy way) you remind me of how skinny I used to be. It's only five lbs, but its making the hugest difference in my clothes!!!!!

  31. Oh gosh Alicia....I'm exactly like you. I was resisting Facebook for the longest time and then I finally got peer pressured into it and now I'm being peer pressured into twitter. Still have not signed up for it yet. I can barely keep up with the my blog and facebook. Let me know how twitter is working out for you. Plus, I have no idea what DIGG is either. I can't even figure out WordPress...now that is bad! I have a friend that fixes everything for me on there. :(
Love, love, love your blog. I just subscribed to it. At least I know how to do that much!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ok, I wondered how I didn't have you on Twitter before! It all makes sense now.

What do you think is worse - to always have been a technically unsavvy person and to try to learn it to blog, or to have always been a very technically savvy person and, having taken 6 years off, feel completely lost with all the new lingo and ways of doing things?

I am jealous of your iPhone. I will never have one, I fear. And then I'll really be clueless and have zero coolness factor. Sigh.

  33. I think I am more of tech stumbler. I eventually figure it out after much frustration (and googling-how did we survive?).
LOVE MY iPhone. I could not live without it!

  34. Hahah...I LOVE it!!!!! Isn't it completely addicting! Thanks for the shout out:)
