Not So Wordless Wednesday Linky Party: Those Good Ol' Days

With Thanksgiving so close, I have family on the brain. I spent a few minutes rummaging through old photos with my daughter today.

Unfortunately there are few photos to show for my 37+ years alive. And even fewer of me and my siblings together. Maybe someone has a more formal photo of all of us, but I couldn't recollect one and I most certainly don't have anything of the sort in my possession.

Mom says Dad was always better at taking photos. Truth be told, I don't think he could ever really see. And interestingly enough, I don't have even one memory of him holding a camera. And Mom was too busy tending to her six kids to do anything, let alone think about snapping photos. No hard feelings, it was just the way it was.

I was a middle child. (12 years younger than the oldest and 4 years older than the youngest. And there is an 8 year gap between number 2 and 3.) Hand-me-downs were all I knew and private space was nonexistent. We gardened. We shared. We worked hard and played harder.

My other cherished memories are strewn together one crappy photo at a time... (Now you know why I am passionate about documenting my kid's lives.)
Photobucket
I am the far left. My best guess is that those curls came from sponge rollers. They were around then, right?

Photobucket
I am the one with my head turned. Figures.

Photobucket
I am the one sitting on Grandma's lap.

Photobucket
I am the angel. (Couldn't be more fitting. Wink, wink.)

Photobucket
I am the third from the right. No mocking. Those are sa-weet bangs.

Photobucket
I am smack in the middle with the light turquoise top. I've lost count, but this next year (2011) we have another family reunion planned in OBX, NC, and if I count correctly there are 31 grandkids. I believe 3 of those are great-grandkids. Don't quote me. Getting nearer to that 50 number for my family with every passing year. It sure makes our get togethers crazy and a little pricey. (Try finding a home for that many people.) The beach is always a hit with all those kids though.

This year my father celebrated his 70th birthday with all of his kids by his side. It was a rare occasion to just hang with my siblings and parents. Like the good ol' days.

Unprimped, Unplanned, and Unprofessional... I'm sure this photo will be treasured for years to come.
Photobucket
I am second from the right next to my little brother who is 18 months younger than myself. The one that towers over all of us. He may or may not belong to us. (Only kidding, bro.)

The Family - “That dear octopus from whose tentacles we never quite escape, nor, in our inmost hearts, ever quite wish to.” -Dodie Smith

Happy WW! Thanks for stopping by. Any Thanksgiving plans? Hope your week ahead is filled with good food and great family and friends. And check out my family's Turkey Hash recipe if you missed it. A great way to use up that leftover turkey.

Make sure to stop by a few of these other Wordless/Wordful Wednesdays if you have a chance.

You can also find a complete list of WW hosts over at Shibley Smiles. Let the games begin.

  14. I miss the family gatherings. I was just looking through old photos myself, my aunt is celebrating her 50 wedding anniversary, and does not want a party! I was so looking forward to it :( even if it was just my 2 cousins & myself.. sigh... since my mom & grandmom passed ( both in the same year 5 years ago) and I live 4 hours away, I feel left out. My own 2 sons live in different states & we rarely see them. I guess I was the only one excited about their anniversary ?!!
Be thankful for the times you have together :)
I have your WW post linked & noted above Mr. Linky, now in my post. Have a nice week.

  15. This was such a great idea! I love taking strolls down memory lane. The bangs were great, and my "little" brother also towers over the rest of us. :-)

Thanks for the linky. Have a great WW!

  16. I have very few picture of myself when I was little, which is probably partially why I am so crazy about taking pictures of my kids!

I love the unplanned photos that turn out to be so precious!

  17. Yep, me too, obsessed with documenting my kids because there's all of TWO pictures of me as a baby! Though, in their defence, it was harder & more expensive to take photos back then. Nowadays, everything has a camera, & there is no time or expense involved in film or developing...but it's still annoying not to have any baby pics lol! Happy WW!

  18. Oh, y'all are gorgeous - what a wonderful family you have. I have 3 older brothers and there are now 21 of us when we all get together and I thought THAT was a lot - ha!

I had so MUCH fun going through old family photos last Spring in preparation for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary party. I'm so glad my folks took lots of pics!

Happy Thanksgiving (early) to you and yours!!

  25. Wonderful pictures!!! FYI, sponge rollers are still around now! Ive used them on my daughter, she loves getting curls! My mom used to curl my hair with them when I was little, I looked like Shirley Temple!

  26. Those are some great pictures! We used to do family reunions in NC - your picture looks pretty similar to one I have- except it was grainy and older....
:) Thanks for the link up!

  28. Looking at through the years photos is the best. I love seeing the changes captured and reminiscing. And the bangs? We all had them didn't we :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Great pictures! I love looks into the past!

  30. I loved your pictures - even better that they weren't "professional"! And your family made me think of my husband's family of six kids - but they were four boys and two girls. The "baby brother" in Wayne's family towers over everyone - the guy is HUGE (was a champion weightlifter) - but his physical characteristics are also explained by the fact that he is adopted. It still makes a great scenario when my hubs (barely 5'6") introduces his "baby brother"!

  31. These are priceless, Alicia. And, what a gorgeous group!

  32. Thank you for sharing your scrap of old photos with us. I enjoyed reading about your family and seeing the years past with each photo. (I had very similar bangs back in the day. lol) I love the last two photos of your family. The one of all your siblings and your dad for his birthday is perfect and priceless. Hang onto to that one TIGHT! Have a blessed holiday with your family.

  38. -->You have a gorgeous family. We do a week vacation with the extended family in OBX every June too. For us, it's a 90 minute drive which makes it nice.
A good friend is a professional photographer if you ever wanted to see if she's available to do pictures. She did our family's this past summer (video link on my blog to youtube) and she's FANTASTIC.

I had those permed bangs, too, by the way. Those were the days! The bigger the better.

  58. I loved seeing the pictures! You and your siblings are all so good looking and your parents look great too! My dad came from a family with 5 kids and my grandmother said as more kids came along the less pictures were taken because you are just so busy trying to get through the day taking pictures is the last thing on your mind LOL! I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
