Not So Wordless Wednesday: DIY 4th of July Chalk (with recipe)

Photobucket

Items Needed for DIY Chalk
Plaster of Paris (found at Lowe's)
Water
Food Coloring (preferably gel)
Wax Paper
Plastic Cups
Silicone Mold
Stirring Sticks

Directions
Pour a little Plaster of Paris into a cup and add water. Repeat until you get the desired consistency. The thinner it is the longer it will take to dry out later, but you need to be able to stir in the food coloring. You should aim for the consistency of pudding. Pour it into the mold and then let it sit to dry out. Takes about 1 1/2-2 hours. Pop them out of mold and enjoy your very own homemade chalk.

You are welcome to grab this recipe card. It has been formatted in a 4x6 size. Just save it as a picture and print it out on cardstock or photo paper. (For personal use only.)

Tasty Tuesdays: 4th of July Cupcakes

This is my Tasty Tuesday's bloghop. Bring a family favorite over, grab my button to the right, and link up!

Today I thought I'd do a yummy for the 4th. We made these last year. They are inspired from none other than martha. And as much as she bugs, I have to admit she has some great ideas.

I'm a funny little thing. I hate cooking, but LOVE creating beautiful looking food. I guess you could say that baking is more my forte.

You can see some of my other holiday cupcakes here.

Photobucket

I thought it'd be fun to share these in honor of the upcoming holiday. I love me some cupcakes! Nothing too difficult with this one. Just a white box mix for the cake. (But for you more seasoned bakers out there feel free to go all out and whip up one of your favorite homemade versions.) I used a buttercream frosting. You can find a printable recipe here. (See below) Find some pull & peel red licorice and blueberries and you have yourself a tasty 4th of July treat. I found some cute star shaped muffin tins that were a fun added touch, but definitely not required. YUM!

VANILLA BUTTERCREAM FROSTING

1 package powdered sugar (16 ounces)
1/2 cup butter, softened (1 stick)
3 tablespoons milk
2 teaspoons vanilla

Beat sugar, butter, milk and vanilla with electric mixer at low speed until well blended and smooth. If frosting becomes too thick, beat in additional milk by teaspoonfuls until the frosting is of spreading consistency. (Makes about 2 1/2 cups frosting.)

Ok, now it's your turn to share. Just link up below. And Happy Tuesday, Y'all!

Week 25 {365} Water+Sun=Fun

Can you guess what we did this weekend?
Photobucket

It involved water and a boat.
Photobucket

And if you guessed skiing... you are partially right.
Photobucket

Look carefully at this next photo...
Photobucket
Don't see anything? Yeah, that would be me skiing. And btw, the kids took most of the photos. Hubs was driving and I was a little busy. Most of the pics looked a bit like this one. (And I drank more of that nasty water than I pour in my face with my neti-pot. I'm pretty sure that can't be good.)

Photobucket
We never actually made it up on the skis, but it wasn't for lack of effort. Little Man, Pokey and I gave it a valiant go on some trainers and after about a dozen tries I managed to stay up for 30 seconds. It was fun, but now I know why there are not any fat skiers. Holy workouts!

The sun came out enough to give us plenty of pool days as well. We might just get our money's worth out of this pass after all.
Photobucket

It was a successful week at the pool minus the whistle scare. And if you follow and were wondering about the little girl... They don't make an announcement and we are left to make our own conclusions, but the kids knew her and heard she was ok. What a relief.
Photobucket

We are sure proud of Little Man's accomplishments.
Photobucket

And can only hope that we continue to have as much fun in the sun in the weeks to come.
Photobucket
How did you spend your week?

TBC aka The Blogger's Concierge

My friends, Gigi from Kludgymom and Melissa (aka Mis) from Miel et Lait, have joined forces to create a never before HOT concept to the blogosphere. They are both a hoot and have so much wisdom and talents that they are willing to share with the blogging community.

Drum roll please... I introduce The Blogger's Concierge.

Sure wish it was around 2 years ago when I started blogging and was entirely clueless in desperate need of some direction. Any direction would have been nice. I meandered for some time before I connected with them.

Well, for all you newcomers and seasoned bloggers alike this is a MUST SEE.

They share insider tips that include product review opportunities, how to get a following, and how to grow a blog. They divulge secrets that are not found elsewhere.

They are compiling a list of A list bloggers. In order to be considered for this title all you have to do is write a short post telling them why you are worthy. This A List Affair is open until Monday, June 28th. So HURRY!!

"Membership on The A List grants bloggers an ultimate insider pass to the best of the blogosphere. Each week, The Blogger’s Concierge puts the spotlight on one A List blog."

I, myself, have been trying to think up reasons why I should be considered for their A list. I've never been much for tooting my own horn (Mom taught me to be humble and to never air my dirty laundry), but I'm gonna give it a go for the sake of their fabulous Red Carpet Events. I've always wanted to get past those red velvet ropes.

Ok, so here goes...

1. I have amazing friends and connections in high places in the cyber world. It seems to work with celebrities and politicians. Why not for bloggers?

2. I don't want to have to resort to renting a billboard or coercing all of my closest friends to follow just to get my name out there. That sounds like such a headache. This seems to be a much simpler solution for advertising.

3. I am a SAHM and am not made of money and can't hire a team of bloggy experts to revamp my blog. And these girls are tech geniuses. I'm looking forward to all the secret tips they will share to beautify my blog on a budget.

4. And lastly, I'm a lame, boring chick from Iowa who never gets out unless you count sitting at the pool surrounded by screaming children splashing you or going to the gym. (And if you read my FFOs then you know what kind of men are in my company at the gym. Eeew.) I could really use an excuse to get dolled up.

There ya have it! My top 4 reasons why I deserve to be an A lister. What about you? Want to have all the inside gab in blogland? You only have 3 days left. Write a short post about why you should be on the A list and then go here and join the bloghop. Come on, I'd love for all my fabulous bloggy friends to be in my company at the next red carpet event so I don't look like an idiot in the corner all by myself.

Friday Flip-Offs 6/25 Edition

This is Friday-Flip Offs, "my way of ridding myself of weekday angst and frustration before heading into the weekend. I virtually flip off whoever is on my last nerve. It’s very cathartic. The theory is that I don’t take anything out on my husband and kids."

Gigi at Kludgymom is the brains behind this brilliant idea.

So, without further ado, let's begin this VIRTUAL DETOX. Ahem...

To my piece of crap car that has contracted a new mystery ailment leaving us temporarily stranded at the pool in 90 degree heat in full sun. Flip Off!
Photobucket

To myself for deciding to take off my swim shorts, but forgetting to sunscreen my upper legs leaving me as red as a lobster and rendering me unfit for just about anything that involves movement for at least 24 hours. I haven't had a burn this bad in at least a decade. Ouch.

Photobucket

To all the socks that have gone AWAL...
Photobucket

And the never ending piles of laundry... you are seriously too annoying for words. Flip Off!!
Photobucket

To all the honkin 8 legged critters, especially the ones I saw carrying those nasty egg sacs...
Photobucket

To the horse flies that buzz around my head every night and harass me until I want to scream...
Photobucket

And to the mysterious special agent ants on a reconnaissance mission to get inside my fridge...
Photobucket

Listen up... Phil is on his way. (PLEASE HURRY, PHIL!) You are SMALL. And I am BIG!! And come Tuesday you had better think twice before you come within 3 feet of this house because his poisonous vapors will eliminate your existence. Mwahahaha!! Flip Off!

Ok, Much better. I feel like I might just survive the weekend.

Now it's YOUR turn. What is bugging you these days? If you are in need of a great vent, try Friday Flip-Offs. It's free and so therapeutic and I'm sure you already have plenty of material. Give it a go! Then stop by the other FFOs. They are so entertaining and sure to bring some good gut rolling laughs.

Water Phobia: Overcoming Fears

Just a beautiful day at the pool...

Photobucket
The calm water and blue skies look refreshing and so peaceful.

But looks can be deceiving!

What you don't see is the hundreds of people behind me that had to evacuate the pool that day because of the whistle...

The whistle that means that a child is either injured or drowned.

Every parent's worst nightmare...

Fear and anxiety that only a mother can know.

Photobucket

It is near impossible to keep an eye on YOUR child every second with the hordes of other children.

When that long whistle sounded I had no idea where my children were. And I couldn't find them. I only knew that the child on a stretcher had a polka dot suit. I went to get a closer look at the unmoving child and panic set in for those 3 minutes of unknown as my mind thought the unimaginable. Within seconds of realizing that the child did not belong to me I located my children and felt instant relief.

But to better understand the magnitude of sheer terror that encompassed me that day we must rewind a bit.

When Little Man was born he had a fear of water. Baths were a nightmare. Screaming, kicking tantrums made baths become less and less frequent. Year after year the phobia seemed to get worse. In retrospect perhaps we should have faced it head on years ago rather than tiptoeing around it. I'm sure the near death experience that involved a canoe tipping over in the Boundary Waters during a storm did nothing to promote calm feelings around water.

And I know that most boys hate showers, but Little Man hates them for entirely different reasons at an entirely different level.

We did the dreaded swim lessons year after year. As Pokey watched Little Man struggle she was also overcome with fear.

Can you find a common theme in the photos below?
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
Year after year it pained me to sit and watch the tears and the inner turmoil that tormented my children day after day.

We bought swim passes several years in a row with the hope that the constant exposure to the water would slowly strip down some of their fears. But 3 straight years now Little Man has been so afraid to put his face in the water that he has been stuck in the Guppy rut and unable to advance.

And having two water fearing children at the pool can do a serious number to one's mental and emotional state as well as their nerves.

I can't begin to tell you how excited I was to finally see Little Man do this on Tuesday this week.
Photobucket
I was inwardly doing flips. This seemingly simple act that most every other child can do without much effort (much like walking or talking) has taken Little Man almost 11 years. I know this was no easy feat for him and that there have been years of pain and turmoil to get here to this point.

Pokey has really taken off recently and her comfort level is much improved in the water. She is now working on flips, bobs, and handstands and loves going down the yellow slide (see photo at top).
Photobucket

They may never be competitive swimmers on a swim team, but they are slowly growing. With every new accomplishment they are that much closer to overcoming their fears.

Not So Wordless Wednesday: Boys will be Boys!

I know this is supposed to be wordless, but had to let ya know that this critter greeted us on our grill yesterday. (Yes, the same grill that cooked our watermelon- in case you were wondering.)

Photobucket

Little Man was thrilled and rushed into the house to find a container. Of course the first thing he found was one of my nice rubbermaids. GRR.

Photobucket

Hubs convinced him he probably shouldn't hold it. (2 points to hubs.) So he just studied it intently through the glass. His stacks of books and encyclopedias don't seem to satisify his insatiable appetite for knowledge when it comes to living creatures.

Photobucket

Pokey wanted nothing to do with this guy. She stood inside out of harms way and held up a sign that read "turantula" while Little Man tried to taunt her.

Photobucket

I understand that we live in the woods and that critters are part of the package, but must they be so close to my home?

I could write a book on the disturbing experiences I had as a child with wolf spiders that scarred me for life, but I'll spare you the details and just suffice it to say that I HATE them- ALL OF THEM!

And yes, the exterminator is scheduled. Phil is a busy guy and couldn't fit us in for a while. Seems to be many critters on the loose. I'm trying to be patient... And you may not see us outside until next Tuesday at noon. Just sayin.

Yet another critter to add to Little Man's ever growing collection...

Photobucket

But then again, BOYS WILL BE BOYS. **SIGH** Only another 8 years to go... heaven help me.

(Oh, and I stocked up on bug containers today. After hunting the world over they were found at the dollar store. Score.)

Let's get this party started. Shall we? Add your link below and then head over to...

See my other Wordless Wednesdays here. Can't wait to see what you come up with this week.

Tasty Tuesdays: Grilled Watermelon Sundaes

Saw this on the Food Network and had to try it. I must confess, I was a bit leery as I'm not a huge watermelon fan. But this is a MUST try for summer. YUM. Who knew?

Ingredients:
1/4 cup lime juice
1/2 lime, zested
1/4 cup honey
dash cayenne pepper
dash salt
nonstick cooking spray
1 small seedless watermelon, cut into 1-inch thick triangles
1 quart vanilla ice cream
whipped cream
1/4 cup chiffonade mint leaves

Photobucket

Add the lime juice, zest, honey, cayenne and salt to a small bowl. Whisk everything together until incorporated.

Photobucket

Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Grease the grill with spray. Add the watermelon slices to the grill and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side. Brush the triangles with the syrup during the last minute of cooking. Transfer the watermelon from the grill to ice cream bowls and top them with generous scoops of vanilla ice cream. Drizzle the remaining syrup over the ice cream. Garnish with some whipped cream and sliced mint leaves and serve.

Photobucket

{Confession: We forgot the mint leaves.} Still Delish!!

Photobucket

And here's a recipe card for the taking. Just right click and save picture and print it on cardstock or photo paper. Enjoy.

Now it's your turn to share. What are you cookin up these days? Just link up one of your favorite recipes below. You can grab the button on the sidebar to the right.

Week 24 {365} Dad's Day

Don't know how I got so lucky...

This week was one of those weeks.... it seemed as if all cosmic forces were working against me in the universe and as hard as I tried nothing seemed to go right... luckily I have myself a good man. He seems to have a knack of being able to make all overwhelming situations better.

The photo below might not look like much, but hubs replaced those 2 little parts in my car and miraculously made it work again for only $45. It appeared to be a pretty serious matter when all lights, A/C, and gauges stopped working, the car overheated and then the outside lights wouldn't stop flickering. It truly seemed possessed and I couldn't help but worry that I'd be carless all summer. But hubs to the rescue.

Photobucket
I can't even begin to tell you all the things he's managed to save or repair over the years. He's industrious, handy, and very inventive.

And when he saves money on said repairs he willingly lets me stock up on plug in refills on sale at Bath and Body.
Photobucket

Hubs loves to be in the kitchen and is a great cook...
Photobucket

and he doesn't mock me when I screw up my night and opt for drive-through.
Photobucket

He lets me read the pages I'm behind for book club...
Photobucket

while he plays with the kids in the pool.
Photobucket

He is calm and humorous even while driving home in scary situations (street adjacent to ours Friday night during flash flooding.)
Photobucket

He is a good sport about taking photos even when he has pink eye that he has contracted from me...
Photobucket

or when the kids are climbing all over him.
Photobucket

And when I totally drop the ball for father's day, he is happy as a clam with the concoction we devise for a spur of the moment breakfast in bed.
Photobucket

Most of all he is a wonderful father to our children. Being the eldest of 6 children he was always more natural with them, even since birth. He finds fun things to do and enjoys being a dad.
Photobucket
Thanks for being such a great husband and father!

I also want to take a moment to let my own father know how much I appreciate him on this special day that has been set apart to honor dads. I don't always get a chance to let him know how much I appreciate him. He's the most energetic, feisty 70 year old I know. He's truly an inspiration. Love you, dad.

Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend with the important men in your lives...
